At the start of 2020, we implemented some big changes in the Pantry! Keep reading for the latest updates.
We are now asking patrons to swipe their NC State ID cards when they use the pantry. Use of the pantry remains confidential and we will only be collecting demographic data which will be reported in aggregate. Our goal is to collect more information so that we can better understand who we serve and improve the resources that we provide through the pantry. Please reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns about this new protocol.
We are excited to start offering produce more consistently in the pantry. Through the winter season, patrons can expect hardy produce items like potatoes and onions, and we hope to expand our inventory as the semester progresses. We would love to hear feedback about the types of produce we should add, so please let us know if you have any ideas. Additionally, patrons can expect more produce in the beginning of the week, as that is when we will stock the items. At this time, we are still only accepting donations of non-perishable food items, but fruit cups and cans are almost always on our most needed items list.
Bread & Freezer Products
Our freezers are on and we think that is so cool! Throughout this semester, we will experiment with offering different food in our freezers from breads to bagels to fruits to pizzas. There may be some limits placed on these items as we assess need, but we are excited to start expanding what we offer in the pantry. We are freezing items like bread because this helps them last longer. We recommend that patrons taking bread from our freezers refrigerate the bread and use it within 1-2 weeks. As we work through using our freezers, our system for dealing with food expiration dates will be different for these specific items, so please feel free to ask us any questions and only take what you feel comfortable eating.
